What does boba tea taste like?

Classic boba tea tastes like sweet, creamy milk tea with chewy brown sugar tapioca pearls at the bottom that taste like caramel and gummy candy.

Boba tea

sweet milk tea, chewy pearls

Boba tea, also called bubble tea, started in Taiwan. The classic is black milk tea, sweet and creamy, with chewy tapioca pearls (the boba) sucked up through a fat straw. The pearls are soaked in brown sugar syrup, so they taste like caramel and have a bouncy, gummy chew. The tea itself is smooth and lightly malty. Beyond the classic, there are fruit teas, taro, matcha, and toppings like jelly or pudding. Most shops let you choose the sweetness and ice level, which changes the drink a lot.

Where you’ll see it

At boba shops and some Asian cafés, served cold in a sealed cup with a wide straw. Menus list tea bases, milk options, toppings and sweetness levels like 50% or 100%.

Order it if you want a sweet drink you can also chew.
