What does a Dark and Stormy taste like?

A Dark and Stormy tastes rich, spicy and fizzy: dark rum with molasses and caramel flavors floating on spicy ginger beer, with a squeeze of lime.

Dark and Stormy

dark rum and spicy ginger

A Dark and Stormy is dark rum poured over ginger beer and ice, usually with a lime wedge. The rum is often floated on top, which makes the stormy-cloud look. It tastes like a spiced ginger soda with depth: the ginger beer brings fizz and a peppery heat, and the dark rum adds molasses, brown sugar and a little vanilla. It's sweeter and richer than a Moscow mule. It's Bermuda's national drink, and Gosling's, the Bermuda rum brand, trademarked the name, so menus often spell it Dark 'n Stormy.

Where you’ll see it

On bar menus and at beach and sailing bars, in a tall glass with a lime wedge. Some bars add fresh lime juice or a dash of bitters.

Order it if you like ginger and want something fizzy with a rich, dark rum sweetness.

Quick questions

Is a Dark and Stormy the same as a rum mule?
Close. Both are rum and ginger beer, but a Dark and Stormy specifically uses a dark, molasses-heavy rum and usually less lime.
Is a Dark and Stormy sweet?
Somewhat. Ginger beer and dark rum are both sweet, but the ginger heat keeps it from tasting sugary.
