What does a Hurricane taste like?

A Hurricane tastes like a sweet, rum-heavy tropical punch: passion fruit, orange and lime with a red fruit syrup sweetness and more rum than you'd guess.

Hurricane

sweet passion fruit rum punch

The Hurricane comes from New Orleans and is built on light and dark rum with passion fruit, lime and usually orange juice and grenadine. Passion fruit is the star: tart, perfumed and tropical, a bit like mango crossed with sour candy. The rum adds warmth and a little caramel underneath. A well-made one is fruity with a real tart edge. The neon versions from powdered mixes on Bourbon Street are much sweeter and taste more like fruit punch than passion fruit.

Where you’ll see it

Quick questions

Is a Hurricane strong?
Fairly. Classic recipes use about four ounces of rum, split between light and dark, so the juice is hiding a lot of alcohol.
What does passion fruit taste like?
Tart, tropical and very fragrant, somewhere between mango, guava and sour candy. It gives the Hurricane most of its flavor.
