What does a Painkiller taste like?

A Painkiller tastes like a piña colada with a little orange and a dusting of nutmeg: creamy coconut, sweet pineapple and warm, dark rum.

Painkiller

spiced piña colada on ice

A Painkiller is dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice and cream of coconut, shaken and served over ice with fresh nutmeg grated on top. It's in the same family as the piña colada, but not blended, and the orange juice and darker rum make it a little less candy-like. You get coconut cream first, then juicy pineapple, then a warm molasses and spice note from the rum and nutmeg. It's sweet, rich and very drinkable, a dessert-ish tropical drink that still tastes like rum.

Where you’ll see it

On tiki and beach bar menus, served over ice in a tall glass or tiki mug with grated nutmeg and a pineapple wedge. Some menus let you pick the strength by how much rum goes in.

Order it if you like a piña colada but want it a little richer, spicier and less slushy.

Quick questions

What's the difference between a Painkiller and a piña colada?
Both have rum, pineapple and coconut. The Painkiller adds orange juice and nutmeg, uses darker rum and is shaken over ice instead of blended.
Is a Painkiller sweet?
Yes. Cream of coconut is very sweet, and pineapple and orange juice add more. It's one of the sweeter drinks on a tiki menu.
