What does a vodka soda taste like?

A vodka soda tastes like cold, bubbly water with a clean alcohol bite and a squeeze of lime: dry, crisp and almost flavorless on purpose.

Vodka soda

clean, dry and bubbly

A vodka soda is a shot of vodka topped with soda water over ice, with a lime or lemon wedge. There is no sugar and no juice, so it tastes like sparkling water with a warm, slightly peppery vodka edge. The citrus is the only real flavor, and squeezing it in makes a big difference. Because there's so little to hide behind, the vodka matters more than you'd think: a better one tastes smoother. It's the drink people order when they want something light, cold and not sweet.

Where you’ll see it

At every bar, rarely written on the menu because everyone knows it. Order it by name, pick a vodka if you like, and it comes in a highball glass with lime.

Order it if you want something cold, dry and simple with no sugar at all.

Quick questions

Is vodka soda the same as vodka tonic?
No. Soda water is plain and unsweetened. Tonic water is sweetened and bitter from quinine, so a vodka tonic tastes sweeter and more bittersweet.
Can you taste the vodka in a vodka soda?
A little. You get a clean, warm edge and not much else, which is why the lime squeeze and the vodka brand matter.
