What does a Grasshopper taste like?
A Grasshopper tastes like mint chocolate chip ice cream in a glass: crème de menthe, crème de cacao and cream shaken into a sweet, creamy, minty green drink.
Grasshopper
mint chocolate chip, drinkable
A Grasshopper is green crème de menthe (a sweet mint liqueur), white crème de cacao (a sweet chocolate liqueur) and cream, shaken and served up. It's bright pale green and tastes exactly like it looks: cool peppermint, milky chocolate and lots of cream, like an Andes mint or a scoop of mint chip. Both liqueurs are fairly low in alcohol, so it's soft and sweet rather than boozy. In Wisconsin and the Midwest, it's often blended with vanilla ice cream into a thick after-dinner shake.
Where you’ll see it
On dessert drink menus, supper clubs and retro cocktail lists, served up in a coupe or blended with ice cream. You may see a chocolate shaving or mint leaf on top.
Order it if you love mint chocolate and want dessert in drink form.
Quick questions
- Is a Grasshopper strong?
- Not very. Both liqueurs are lower in alcohol than spirits, and cream softens it further.
- Why is a Grasshopper green?
- Green crème de menthe, a sweet mint liqueur that is dyed bright green. White crème de cacao is clear, so it doesn't change the color.
