What does a Hemingway Daiquiri taste like?
A Hemingway Daiquiri tastes sharp, tart and dry: white rum and lime with grapefruit juice and a little maraschino liqueur, so it is bracing, citrusy and only faintly sweet.
Hemingway Daiquiri
tart rum, lime and grapefruit
The Hemingway Daiquiri, also called a Papa Doble, is named for Ernest Hemingway and the Havana bar El Floridita. It's rum, lime, grapefruit juice and a splash of maraschino, a clear Italian cherry liqueur that tastes more floral and nutty than cherry candy. There's little or no added sugar, so it's much tarter than a regular daiquiri. The grapefruit adds a juicy, slightly bitter edge and the maraschino a faint perfume. It's crisp and pucker-y, a good pick if most cocktails taste too sweet to you.
Where you’ll see it
On classic cocktail menus and at rum bars, served up in a coupe, sometimes blended. You may see it listed as a Papa Doble or Hemingway Special.
Order it if you like tart drinks and find most cocktails too sweet.
Quick questions
- What is maraschino liqueur?
- A clear liqueur made from marasca cherries, pits and all. It tastes floral, nutty and a little funky, not like the bright red cherries in a Shirley Temple.
- Is a Hemingway Daiquiri sour?
- Yes, more than a regular daiquiri. It has very little sugar, so lime and grapefruit lead.
