What does a daiquiri taste like?

A classic daiquiri tastes crisp, tart and clean: white rum, fresh lime and a little sugar, shaken ice cold, so it is bright and refreshing, not slushy or fruity.

Daiquiri

rum, lime, a little sugar

Forget the frozen strawberry version for a second. A real daiquiri is just white rum, lime juice and sugar, shaken hard and served up in a small coupe. It tastes like the best limeade you've had, with a grown-up rum kick: tangy, lightly sweet and very cold. Good white rum adds a gentle sugarcane sweetness and a hint of vanilla. Because it's so simple, the balance matters a lot, and bartenders often order one to see how good a bar is. It's small, sharp and goes down fast.

Where you’ll see it

On classic cocktail lists, served up with a lime wheel. Beach bars and chain restaurants mostly serve frozen daiquiris blended with strawberry, mango or banana, which taste much sweeter.

Order it if you want something tart, cold and clean that tastes like a fancy limeade.

Quick questions

Is a daiquiri a frozen drink?
Not originally. The classic is shaken and served up. Frozen fruit daiquiris came later and are much sweeter.
What's the difference between a daiquiri and a mojito?
Both are rum, lime and sugar. A mojito adds mint and soda and comes tall over ice, so it is lighter. A daiquiri is shaken and served up, so it is sharper and stronger.
